Free Online Invitations -- Pingg, Evite, My Punchbowl, etc.

I have been reviewing the potential for using online invitation systems for scheduling and managing invitation for a workshop on EndNote, EndNote Web, and Zotero at my institution and I thought I would share my thoughts....such as they are.  I googled online invitation systems and got evite and a few others right away and since evite didn't fit my needs, I looked further.  The best comparison I found of services was from squidoo, entitled "Free Online Invitation Comparison and Evite Alternatives".  After looking at the sites listed, I choose Pingg - http://www.pingg.com/.

The reason for my choosing is the layout options, the ability to customize as well as the fact that it contained the key elements I needed.  These essential elements included (1) ability to e-mail invitations, (2) a web page for non-invited people to sign-up and register, (3) the ability to limit the number of registrations to the room size, and (4) the ability to communicate with the invited and registered attendees (to thank attendees, use surveymonkey for evaluation, or in case I have to change date or cancel.)

There are several which had these features and some that didn't.  A brief overview.

Evite didn't create a web page unless you were invited so it was out of the running... You could use it and say you weren't the person invited and then put in your name and e-mail but I couldn't figure out how to gather the e-mails and also explaining this seemed problematic...

PurpleTrail -- had to pay to limit the number of RSVPs -- so that's out

My Punch Bowl -- their e-mail went into my spam filter so this was a problem, plus it's name didn't seem professional.  Had all the other features -- probably my 3rd choice...

Man Vites -- not professional

Made It -- Doesn't work

Good Invitation -- Interesting might use sometime due to being able to used customized flash -- but no way to limit RSVP"s.

Events Listed -- Ticketing Service -- NA

Socializer -- My 2nd Choice -- probably better in functionality than Pinng but not as artsy or clean looking.  Had all the features and more and could be customized to make it look like I think I want it....

Invitastic - Not working on sending when I looked.... so I didn't look further.

Zoji -- Can't limit number of guests/RSVP's

Enclude -- Doesn't work

Shindigg - No limiting number of attendees and no website

Sendomatic -- Need to pay for more than 10 invites...

So Pingg (http://www.pingg.com/) is my choice --  I will let you know how it works out and if I switch to another system... If you know of any e-vite or ticketing systems that are free that have my criteria that I missed let me know.

Thanks -- Stephen

Is E-Book Milestone Worth Cheering?

By MIKE FLEMING | Tuesday July 20, 2010 @ 9:21am EDT

318208709_e9bcd442a6Amazon.com is crowing that for the first time, its e-book sales volume has surpassed hardcovers. Am I the only one who sees this as an apocalyptic sign for the great pleasure of book reading? Amazon's basing  its assertion on sales figures for the last three months, when buyers were lining their Amazon Kindles with summer beach reading. Amazon chief Jeffrey Bezos marvels that the milestone is more remarkable given that Amazon has only been selling e-books 33 months, as opposed to the 15 years it has been moving hardcovers. A report on the milestone in The New York Times indicates that within the next decade, less than 25% of books sold will be in print.

The lure of e-books is easy to understand: with no trees killed, books come cheaper to consumers, who no longer have to lug around hardcovers when an entire library can be loaded into a single lightweight device. On the cost front, I wonder what will happen when the makers of Kindle and other devices corner the publishing market and are no longer interested in selling its software at loss leader prices so that it can move hardware. That confrontation is inevitable, when more brick and mortar stores vanish.

My biggest problem--and the reason I'll always stick to print books--is that I think the entire experience of reading a books is cheapened by technology, same as it was in music. Young people don't become invested in musical artists the way I did when I bought vinyl albums, savored the cover art and gave every song a chance (my kids pay a buck to download hits only and don't care about an artist's progression). Future generations of readers won't value the ritual experience of buying a book, appreciating its distinctive smell and formative heft, earning the way to the end, page by page, and then displaying the best ones like trophies on a shelf.

Now, the whole business of publishing is changing. More and more authors like James Patterson are co-writing novels. That's made them more prolific and wealthy, but it doesn't mean their books are better. Tom Clancy is taking this a step further this fall with the fall publication of Dead or Alive, a Jack Ryan thriller. All of the big authors write their signature franchise character books solo--Patterson works alone on his Alex Cross mysteries--Clancy wrote the Jack Ryan book with frequent collaborator Grant Blackwood. While other authors continued Ian Fleming's James Bond series, Robert Ludlum's Bourne series and even Mario Puzo's The Godfather characters, it's  only because those authors are dead. What's Clancy's excuse? I see it as another step in the wrong direction.

As for e-books, I'll give the last word to Elmore Leonard, who's still cranking out his customary 3 to 4 pages each day from 10-6, even as he prepares to turn 85. "To me, a book is a book, an electronic device is not, and love of books was the reason I started writing," Leonard told me recently. "I don’t have a word processor, e-mail, any of that stuff. I write in longhand mostly, then put it on my typewriter as I go along. I don’t have any interest in any of that electronic stuff, but I’m going on 85, and won’t have to worry about it too much longer.”

What about the rest of us, Elmore?

"God I hate Fox News... though ... it's not usually that bad at the local level" -- HSM

Fox Chicago Affiliate: 'Do We Still Need Libraries?'

July 02, 2010 9:19 am ET by Joe Strupp

Fox 3 in Chicago takes on the issue of funding for libraries and gives credibility to a state proposal to cut state library funds. The station even places a camera outside a local library to see how many people come and go on a given day.

"They eat up millions of your hard earned tax dollars. It's money that could be used to keep your child's school running. So with the internet and e-books, do we really need millions for libraries" the Fox reporter states. "Libraries are quiet havens for the community. They take us to other worlds. They even make us laugh. But should these institutions -- that date back to 1900 B.C. -- be on the way out?"

FREE WONDER WOMAN!!! --DC Comics Has Ruined Wonder Woman!

By Nikki Finke | Wednesday June 30, 2010 @ 4:23am PDT

DEADLINE EXCLUSIVE: Don Kramer's Wonder Woman

DC Comics announced that, starting today, Wonder Woman "will appear like you’ve never seen her before". And I wish they'd just left her alone, especially since she's the only comic book character female I've ever admired. Of course, it took a bunch of men to ruin her. Look at the new costume design by DC Comics Co-Publisher Jim Lee below: she looks ready for Goth Day at the Sherman Oaks Galleria. (Shame on Diane Nelson, the head of DC Entertainment, for allowing this to happen. And for not finding a talented woman writer to update the icon's saga.) Here's the announcement about the dumbass stuff that DC Comics is doing to her. So let me start the campaign: FREE WONDER WOMAN!

The Biographical Dictionary of Iowa - The University of Iowa Libraries

The Biographical Dictionary of Iowa - The University of Iowa Libraries

Online version of The Biographical Dictionary of Iowa, edited by David Hudson, Marvin Bergman, and Loren Horton. Written by an impressive team of more than 150 scholars and writers, The Biographical Dictionary of Iowa was created to spotlight prominent Iowans throughout the history of the region.

Iowa has been blessed with citizens of strong character who have made invaluable contributions to the state and to the nation. In the 1930s alone, such towering figures as John L. Lewis, Henry A. Wallace, and Herbert Hoover hugely influenced the nation’s affairs. Iowa’s Native Americans, early explorers, inventors, farmers, scholars, baseball players, musicians, artists, writers, politicians, scientists, conservationists, preachers, educators, and activists continue to enrich our lives and inspire our imaginations.

The Biographical Dictionary of Iowa includes each subject’s name, birth and death dates, place of birth, education, and career and contributions. Many of the names will be instantly recognizable to most Iowans; others are largely forgotten but deserve to be remembered. Beyond the distinctive lives and times captured in the individual biographies, readers of the dictionary will gain an appreciation for how the character of the state has been shaped by the character of the individuals who have inhabited it.

Back to College: Getting Started

Welcome! Going back to college as an adult can be a daunting (sometimes even scary), but very worthwhile experience. We all know that there are many talented and accomplished individuals who never went to college or for some reason or another were not able to complete their degree. For many, earning that "piece of paper" can make a significant difference in their professional or personal life (the achievement of a lifelong dream) - but the idea of returning to school after a long absence can present quite a challenge.

Often adults who are returning to school after years of not being in a classroom are apprehensive about not fitting in (for example, being thrust into a classroom with 18 to 25 year olds), taking good notes, studying, and doing well on tests. The admissions and financial aid process can be a confusing and frustrating experience. Back to College® offers a directory of resources and interactive community specifically designed to help manage these challenges, including an Ask the Experts and online discussion forum.

Roadside America - Guide to Uniquely Odd Tourist Attractions

Roadside America - Guide to Uniquely Odd Tourist Attractions

RoadsideAmerica.com

RoadsideAmerica.com is a caramel-coated-nutbag-full of odd and hilarious travel destinations -- over 9,000 places -- ready for exploration.

Since our first book, Roadside America, introduced readers to the world of offbeat tourist attractions, we (authors and road trip know-it-alls Doug Kirby, Ken Smith, Mike Wilkins) haven't slowed down. In fact, we're speeding up! Or maybe it's just a bad optical illusion...

Planning Your Own Road Trips

Site visitors often tell us our write-ups help them plan their own trips. We provide directions to attractions and even maps when available; otherwise, just drive to the town and ask a local. It's more fun that way.

We list some attraction hours and admission prices, but be wary -- these change frequently at many offbeat places.

Hours are sometimes a crap shoot. Graveyards are open all the time; but lone fanatical collectors may be off digging up petrified leeches, or getting their medication when you arrive. You take your chances. Call ahead if you're going way out of your way.

For reasons that grow hazier with time, we produced a thicker, more depraved sequel, New Roadside America. The books chronicled tourist attractions throughout the continental United States -- from the World's Largest Twine Ball to an obscure monument to a patriotic pig.

After a series of Hypertours in the early 1990s, the Internet found us (or vice versa). In 1994, we guided AOL and Hotwired users on the web's first real-time, coast-to-coast "virtual vacation" -- a Hypertour from California to New York.

We launched RoadsideAmerica.com in 1996. Here's a 10 Year March of History.

The most memorable local eateries along the highways and back roads of America

Roadfood means great regional meals along highways, in small towns and in city neighborhoods.
It is non-franchised, sleeves-up food made by cooks, bakers, pitmasters, and sandwich-makers who are America’s culinary folk artists.
Roadfood is almost always informal and inexpensive; and the best Roadfood restaurants are colorful places enjoyed by locals (and savvy travelers) for their character as well as their menu.
It is our intention that Roadfood.com will lead the way to:

  • great local color
  • the best regional specialties
  • unforgettable diners, celestial barbecue, and four-star pig-outs galore!

AMG started out in 1991 in Big Rapids, MI. Our original mission was to create books to help consumers find the "best" music. But, as our databases grew, we saw they could be powerful tools for online retailers and entertainment destinations. We started licensing the All Music Guide in 1993. In 1994, we added the All Movie Guide. Our award-winning websites started in 1995 and helped us find even more licensing customers. In 1998 we created the All Game Guide to address that growing market. In order to accommodate the growth of our business, we moved to Ann Arbor, MI in 1999. Since then, our staff has tripled in size.

What exactly does AMG do?

AMG licenses our entertainment content databases and technologies to a number of clients. We also maintain our websites, continue to produce new editions of our successful music guide series with Backbeat Books, and, in conjunction with Medalist Entertainment, we recently released the first group of CDs enhanced by our content.

The allmusic website was created in 1995 as a place for music fans to indulge their passion. Whether you’re visiting allmusic to look up an out-of-print recording, to get our take on a new release, or simply to explore the world of music and see where it may lead, you’ve come to the right spot.

The AMG editorial staff, along with hundreds of expert contributors (all music fanatics in their own right), has made allmusic the most comprehensive music reference source on the planet. We are all dedicated to creating and maintaining the knowledgeable, spirited content that music lovers and industry professionals have come to expect from AMG.

All genres and styles of music are covered here, ranging from the most commercially popular to the most obscure. We critique albums and artists within the context of their own genres - from opera to garage rock to traditional country. This ensures that fans of any style of music can depend on us to keep them up-to-date with their favorite artists as well as introduce them to new sounds.

For the vast range of artists, albums, and musical styles that we cover, we delve beneath the surface to present a level of detail unmatched anywhere else. Content on allmusic falls into the following four categories:

  • Meta Data: Facts about an album or artist, including title, tracks, genre, label, credits, release date, and cover and artist images.
  • Descriptive Content: Deeper details that really illuminate an artist or album including styles, moods, years active, instruments, birth/death date/place, and country of origin.
  • Relational Content: Information that helps you make meaningful connections between artists and the music – such as major influencers and followers, similar artists, top artists, and top albums.
  • Editorial Content: Original and insightful writing by AMG’s staff and network of professional freelance music contributors. This content includes biographies, album and song reviews, style descriptions, composition descriptions, and AMG ratings and picks.

By word-of-mouth alone, the allmusic website has gained phenomenal popularity, developing a large and loyal following among consumers and industry professionals alike. Editorial independence has always been an AMG hallmark, and the numerous awards allmusic has won are a testament to AMG’s status as a respected and trusted voice in music content and criticism.

About Our Roots

Originally known as All Music Guide, AMG was founded in 1991 to help consumers navigate the increasingly complex world of recorded music and discover the very best recordings. It was an ambitious, even overwhelming mission that would only be attempted by true music lovers like us. But we were determined, and the following year we published the first of our All Music Guide reference books.

By 1993, we’d expanded our content to include movies and video games, and we began licensing to retailers, online content sites and other companies in entertainment media. Licensing remains the core of our business today, and our licensees include some of the world’s most recognized brands, including Microsoft, AOL, Yahoo!, Amazon, Barnes & Noble, Best Buy, Ticketmaster, Musicmatch and Napster.

The Memento Project

The Memento Project

The Memento Project

About Guide Demos Tools

Have you ever felt frustrated by your inability to get to old versions of Web pages? Did you bookmark a page last year, and revisited it recently only to find that the current content isn't even remotely related to what caught your interest back then?

If so, the Memento project should be of interest to you because it advocates a rather straightforward approach to make navigating last year’s Web as easy as navigating today’s.

Remnants of the past Web are available, and there are many efforts ongoing to archive even more Web content. It’s just that the past Web is not as readily accessible as today’s. For example, if you want to see an archived version of http://cnn.com, you can go to the Internet Archive’s Wayback Machine and search for it there. Yes, you can find the CNN front page of 9/11 there. Or if you want to see an old version of the Wikipedia page about – say – Clocks, you can go to the current page and from there follow a link to one of the many prior versions. And, if you are interested in stories that featured on the BBC news site on your last year’s birthday, you can explore the archive that Matthew Somerville set up in his spare time.

But wouldn’t it be much easier if you could just connect to cnn.com, Wikipedia, or news.bbc.co.uk indicating that you are interested in the pages of March 20 2008, not the current ones? If you could activate a time machine in your browser or bot?

We definitely think it would be quite a feat, and we have some ideas on how to get there.

Futurity.org

Futurity.org

Futurity aggregates the very best research news. The content is produced by the partner universities, and submitted to Futurity’s editor, Jenny Leonard (editor@futurity.org) , for consideration. The site, which is hosted at the University of Rochester, covers news in the environment, health, science, society, and other areas.

Why Futurity? Why now?
The way people share information is changing quickly and daily. Blogs and social media sites like YouTube, Twitter, and Facebook are just a taste of what’s to come. It will be easier than ever to share content instantly with people around the globe, allowing universities to reach new audiences and engage a new generation in discovery.

Equally significant has been the recent decline in science and research coverage by traditional news outlets. For decades, universities have partnered with journalists to communicate their work to the public, but that relationship is evolving. At the same time, research universities are among the most credible and trusted institutions in society, and now have the ability to deliver their news and information directly to readers.

In an increasingly complex world, the public needs access to clear, reliable research news. Futurity does the work of gathering that news. Think of it as a snapshot of where the world is today and where it’s headed tomorrow. Discover the future.

U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics

The Bureau of Labor Statistics is the principal fact-finding agency for the Federal Government in the broad field of labor economics and statistics. [More about the BLS Mission]

Vision

With the strongest commitment to integrity and objectivity, the BLS will be premier among statistical agencies, producing impartial, timely, and accurate data relevant to the needs of our users and to the social and economic conditions of our Nation, its workers, and their families.

Economic Policy Institute

Economic Policy Institute

The Economic Policy Institute, a nonprofit Washington D.C. think tank, was created in 1986 to broaden the discussion about economic policy to include the interests of low- and middle-income workers. Today, with global competition expanding, wage inequality rising, and the methods and nature of work changing in fundamental ways, it is as crucial as ever that people who work for a living have a voice in the economic discourse.

EPI was the first — and remains the premier — organization to focus on the economic condition of low- and middle-income Americans and their families. Its careful research on the status of American workers has become the gold standard in that field. Its encyclopedic State of Working America, issued every two years since 1988, is stocked in university libraries around the world. EPI researchers, who often testify to Congress and are widely cited in the media, first brought to light the disconnect between pay and productivity that marked the U.S. economy in the 1990s and is now widely recognized as a cause of growing inequality.

Current Population Survey (CPS) Main Page

Current Population Survey (CPS) Main Page

The Current Population Survey (CPS) is a monthly survey of about 50,000 households conducted by the Bureau of the Census for the Bureau of Labor Statistics. The survey has been conducted for more than 50 years.
The CPS is the primary source of information on the labor force characteristics of the U.S. population. The sample is scientifically selected to represent the civilian noninstitutional population. Respondents are interviewed to obtain information about the employment status of each member of the household 15 years of age and older. However, published data focus on those ages 16 and over. The sample provides estimates for the nation as a whole and serves as part of model-based estimates for individual states and other geographic areas.
Estimates obtained from the CPS include employment, unemployment, earnings, hours of work, and other indicators. They are available by a variety of demographic characteristics including age, sex, race, marital status, and educational attainment. They are also available by occupation, industry, and class of worker. Supplemental questions to produce estimates on a variety of topics including school enrollment, income, previous work experience, health, employee benefits, and work schedules are also often added to the regular CPS questionnaire.
CPS data are used by government policymakers and legislators as important indicators of our nations’s economic situation and for planning and evaluating many government programs. They are also used by the press, students, academics, and the general public.

Orato translates from the Latin to "I speak" and that is exactly what we invite Correspondents to do – tell our audience about newsworthy experiences emerging from their corner of the planet, the novel places, people, events, careers, culture, discoveries and skills that make them a source of trustworthy information for others seeking advice or doing reconnaissance on an eclectic range of subjects.

Professor in Training: Faculty websites

Professor in Training: Faculty websites

Need to follow the link to see the feedback received -- but I like the topic....HSM

Faculty websites Our department has a dismal excuse for a website which is almost impossible to navigate, the information is outdated and the links to/from the main gateway pages are all broken. But nobody seems to think this is an issue. Except me. Also, none of the faculty have individual pages which I think is a Very Bad Thing in terms of visibility, recruitment, etc. But nobody seems to think this is an issue. Except me.

Anyway, Im in the process of designing my own page and also a separate set of pages for my lab. I know the type of stuff I want in both of these but I was looking for feedback from both current and prospective students and postdocs as well as other faculty as to what you look for if/when you go searching for faculty/lab pages.

Students When youre hunting for prospective mentors, what type of stuff do you want to see on their sites? Do you just want a list of degrees, publications and a couple of keywords that describe the PIs research or do you want a little bit more? If/when you join a lab, do you want your project/information/photo included in the lab page?

Faculty When you google other faculty, what types of things do you hope to find on their site? Do you look through faculty websites when reviewing grants? If so, why?

Any/all suggestions and/or comments are very welcome. If you have a page that you really like that you dont want to link to here, particularly if its your own, feel free to email me and point out why you think its stellar.
