DRAM

DRAM

DRAM is a not-for-profit resource providing educational communities with on-demand streaming access to CD-quality audio (192kbps Mp4), complete original liner notes and essays from independent record labels and sound archives. Continuing in the tradition of DRAM's sister company New World Records, one of DRAM's primary focuses is the preservation and dissemination of important recordings that have been neglected by the commercial marketplace, recordings that may otherwise become lost or forgotten.
Currently DRAM's collection contains more than 3,000 albums worth of recordings from a distinctive set of 26 independent labels, and we are continually working to add more content. The basis for the current collection is the diverse catalogue of American music recordings by New World Records. From folk to opera, Native American to jazz, 19th century classical to early rock, musical theater, contemporary, electronic and beyond, New World has served composers, artists, students and the general public since its inception in 1975 with a grant from the Rockefeller Foundation.
DRAM also includes music from other contributing sources, including the CRI, Albany, innova, Cedille, XI, Pogus, Deep Listening and Mutable Music labels. In the future, alliances with other major and independent labels and archival sources will be crucial to enhancing DRAM's role of serving the needs of serious music scholars.

DRAM is accessible to anyone at a participating university, college or public library. At this time, individual subscriptions are not available, though DRAM intends to offer them in the future.
DRAM does not limit the number of users at any one time, and offers subscribers unlimited access to all its contents from either on or off-campus locations. DRAM observes all legal and industry mandated copyright and artist royalties.
DRAM has been made possible with an initial grant from the Robert Sterling Clark Foundation and by substantial ongoing support from The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, as well as all of DRAM's participating institutions.

allmusic

allmusic

The allmusic website was created in 1995 as a place for music fans to indulge their passion. Whether you’re visiting allmusic to look up an out-of-print recording, to get our take on a new release, or simply to explore the world of music and see where it may lead, you’ve come to the right spot.

The AMG editorial staff, along with hundreds of expert contributors (all music fanatics in their own right), has made allmusic the most comprehensive music reference source on the planet. We are all dedicated to creating and maintaining the knowledgeable, spirited content that music lovers and industry professionals have come to expect from AMG.

All genres and styles of music are covered here, ranging from the most commercially popular to the most obscure. We critique albums and artists within the context of their own genres - from opera to garage rock to traditional country. This ensures that fans of any style of music can depend on us to keep them up-to-date with their favorite artists as well as introduce them to new sounds.

For the vast range of artists, albums, and musical styles that we cover, we delve beneath the surface to present a level of detail unmatched anywhere else. Content on allmusic falls into the following four categories:

  • Meta Data: Facts about an album or artist, including title, tracks, genre, label, credits, release date, and cover and artist images.
  • Descriptive Content: Deeper details that really illuminate an artist or album including styles, moods, years active, instruments, birth/death date/place, and country of origin.
  • Relational Content: Information that helps you make meaningful connections between artists and the music – such as major influencers and followers, similar artists, top artists, and top albums.
  • Editorial Content: Original and insightful writing by AMG’s staff and network of professional freelance music contributors. This content includes biographies, album and song reviews, style descriptions, composition descriptions, and AMG ratings and picks.

By word-of-mouth alone, the allmusic website has gained phenomenal popularity, developing a large and loyal following among consumers and industry professionals alike. Editorial independence has always been an AMG hallmark, and the numerous awards allmusic has won are a testament to AMG’s status as a respected and trusted voice in music content and criticism.

About Our Roots

Originally known as All Music Guide, AMG was founded in 1991 to help consumers navigate the increasingly complex world of recorded music and discover the very best recordings. It was an ambitious, even overwhelming mission that would only be attempted by true music lovers like us. But we were determined, and the following year we published the first of our All Music Guide reference books.

By 1993, we’d expanded our content to include movies and video games, and we began licensing to retailers, online content sites and other companies in entertainment media. Licensing remains the core of our business today, and our licensees include some of the world’s most recognized brands, including Microsoft, AOL, Yahoo!, Amazon, Barnes & Noble, Best Buy, Ticketmaster, Musicmatch and Napster.

Cylinder Preservation and Digitization Project

Cylinder Preservation and Digitization Project

Cylinder recordings, the first commercially produced sound recordings, are a snapshot of musical and popular culture in the decades around the turn of the 20th century. They have long held the fascination of collectors and have presented challenges for playback and preservation by archives and collectors alike.

With funding from the Institute of Museum and Library Services, the UCSB Libraries have created a digital collection of nearly 8,000 cylinder recordings held by the Department of Special Collections. In an effort to bring these recordings to a wider audience, they can be freely downloaded or streamed online.

On this site you will have the opportunity to find out more about the cylinder format, listen to thousands of musical and spoken selections from the late 19th and early 20th centuries, and discover a little-known era of recorded sound. If you know what you are looking for click the search button to begin, or you can browse by genre or sample some of our favorite selections in the featured cylinder section or by listening to online streaming radio.

Sheet Music Consortium

http://digital.library.ucla.edu/sheetmusic/

The Sheet Music Consortium is a group of libraries working toward the goal of building an open collection of digitized sheet music using the Open Archives Initiative:Protocol for Metadata Harvesting (OAI:PMH).

Harvested metadata about sheet music in participating collections is hosted by UCLA Digital Library Program, which provides an access service via this metadata to sheet music records at the host libraries. For technical details of the harvesting process and service, consult the Project Timeline and Technical Overview. Member institutions and data providers have chosen to catalog their sheet music in different ways, but a very large proportion of the original sheets in participating collections has been digitized, allowing users direct access to the music itself and — in many cases — covers and advertisements that offer evidence of the cultural context in which the songs were published.

Welcome to AllAboutJazz.com!

 Welcome to AllAboutJazz.com!

Welcome to AllAboutJazz.com!

Welcome to All About Jazz, a site produced by jazz fans for jazz fans. Our mission is to provide information and opinion about jazz from the past, present, and future. Through our "Global Jazz" section, reviews of jazz from around the world, and interviews with international musicians, we approach the music from four continents, including ten cities in the US alone. That content is carefully organized under the menu bar above.

While compiling and organizing all this information and opinion, we strive to serve both the jazz newbie as well as the jazz afficionado. Listeners who are new to jazz may profit from visiting our Building a Jazz Library section; those with more of an established interest will find our extensive archives of reviews and interviews helpful. And everyone should get a chuckle out of our humor section.

The internet is a great place to find information, and we maintain stacks and stacks of it: about jazz festivals, radio stations, upcoming releases, and much more (just look under the "guides" section of the menu bar).

Throughout the site, we have emphasized an interactive approach. The jazz timeline and "This Day in Jazz History," for example, allow readers to check out the major developments in a year, month & day of their choosing. We organize our reviews so that you can home in on a particular style that you prefer (or wish to investigate). We provide multiple forums for you to express and exchange opinions on all sorts of issues relating to the music and the musicians.

Finally, we make an ongoing effort to stay current. We constantly update our news section, and we offer cutting-edge interviews among over 40 featured columns. Each month we review 150-200 new and reissued CD's, giving you advance notice so you'll know where to look when you visit the record shop. For the latest happenings at the site, visit our monthly greeting page.

So please take advantage of all we have to offer. Every single person on the All About Jazz staff contributes because they love the music. We have a strong feeling that our enthusiasm may be contagious. Who knows... maybe you'll have something unique to offer as well!
