About SaferProducts.gov

SaferProducts.gov is the Publicly Available Consumer Product Safety Information Database website of the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC).

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission is charged with protecting the public from unreasonable risks of injury or death from thousands of types of consumer products under the agency’s jurisdiction. The CPSC is committed to protecting consumers and families from products that pose a fire, electrical, chemical, or mechanical hazard or can injure children. The CPSC’s work to ensure the safety of consumer products—such as toys, cribs, power tools, cigarette lighters, and household chemicals—contributed significantly to the decline in the rate of deaths and injuries associated with consumer products over the past 30 years.

Through SaferProducts.gov, consumers, child service providers, health care professionals, government officials and public safety entities can submit reports of harm (Reports) involving consumer products. Manufacturers (including importers) and private labelers identified in Reports will receive a copy of the Report, and have the opportunity to comment on them. Completed Reports and manufacturer comments are published online at www.SaferProducts.gov for anyone to search.
CPSC was required to create a public portal and a publicly accessible, searchable database of consumer product incident reports by the Consumer Product Safety Improvement Act (CPSIA), which became law on August 14, 2008.

The Pop History Dig - a collection of short stories about popular culture - its history, its people, and its power

The Pop History Dig - a collection of short stories about popular culture - its history, its people, and its power

Welcome to The Pop History Dig.

In today’s world, busy people often miss or by-pass important historic and cultural events when they first occur.  Others have completely forgotten older events or know little of their significance.  The Pop History Dig is offered as a place to revisit some of that cultural history, whether decades old or occurring just last week.  It is also a place to consider and reconsider the importance and meaning of these events – and their impact on society.

What you will find here is a collection of stories that probe the history and power of popular culture – its people, its businesses, and its politics.  Everything from Thomas Edison’s inventions to Oprah Winfrey’s political endorsements is fair game at this site – and more.  Music, sport, film, and television are all part of the mix.  Media and entertainment, quite obviously, figure prominently in  make up of popular culture, and these are a primary focus.  History is covered, yes, but it’s history with a difference; political, cultural, and business history; history that helps explain, for example, how media and entertainment have become such a pervasive part of our daily lives.

All of this is served up in a short- to medium-length story format – stories that are somewhat longer than a typical blog, but in-depth enough to provide thorough coverage of a particular subject or offer some new arrangement of  information.  Each story typically includes period photos, sidebars, and other graphics.  Some will contain music files, and some will link to videos on YouTube and elsewere.  There is also biography, business history, and a share of nostalgia found here.  Some stories are serious and conven- tional, others less so.

Jack Kennedy’s politics are covered, as well as Mickey Mantle’s home runs and Madonna’s music.  Warner Brothers’ film history is included, along with John Steinbeck’s novels and the power of 1930s’ radio.  Walt Disney’s empire and how Ted Turner built CNN are also covered. Jack Kennedy’s politics are covered, as well as  Mickey Mantle’s home runs and Madonna’s music. And other stories to come might focus on the product endorsements of basketball phenom LeBron James, the history of MTV, or a Ray Charles song.

These are all stories of a kind; part of the mix of people and events sometimes called “popular culture.”  But they are also more than that.  They are stories of money, politics, and power, too – and also, the longer timeline of history.  They tell us something about who we are, where we have come from, and what we value.  Some are significant in business or the arts; others have become historic milestones and landmarks; and still others have become woven into the social fabric over time.  Some are embedded in our personal lives and emotional memories – from music and film, or a good book or memorable sporting event.  And whether personal marker or cultural milestone, many of these events have come to us by way of the media and entertainment industries.

Food Environment Atlas

Food Environment Atlas

Food environment factors—such as store/restaurant proximity, food prices, food and nutrition assistance programs, and community characteristics—interact to influence food choices and diet quality. Research is beginning to document the complexity of these interactions, but more is needed to identify causal relationships and effective policy interventions.

The objectives of the Atlas are:

  • To assemble statistics on food environment indicators to stimulate research on the determinants of food choices and diet quality

  • To provide a spatial overview of a community’s ability to access healthy food and its success in doing so

What information is included in the Atlas?

The Atlas assembles statistics on three broad categories of food environment factors:

  • Food Choices—Indicators of the community's access to and acquisition of healthy, affordable food, such as: access and proximity to a grocery store; number of foodstores and restaurants; expenditures on fast foods; food and nutrition assistance program participation; quantities of foods eaten; food prices; food taxes; and availability of local foods

  • Health and Well-Being—Indicators of the community’s success in maintaining healthy diets, such as: food insecurity; diabetes and obesity rates; and physical activity levels

  • Community Characteristics—Indicators of community characteristics that might influence the food environment, such as: demographic composition; income and poverty; population loss; metro-nonmetro status; natural amenities; and recreation and fitness centers

The Atlas currently includes 168 indicators of the food environment. The year and geographic level of the indicators vary to better accommodate data from a variety of sources. Some data are from the last Census of Population in 2000 while others are as recent as 2009. Some are at the county level while others are at the State or regional level. The most recent county-level data are used whenever possible.

See Documentation for complete list of indicators, definitions and data sources.

Free Online Invitations -- Pingg, Evite, My Punchbowl, etc.

I have been reviewing the potential for using online invitation systems for scheduling and managing invitation for a workshop on EndNote, EndNote Web, and Zotero at my institution and I thought I would share my thoughts....such as they are.  I googled online invitation systems and got evite and a few others right away and since evite didn't fit my needs, I looked further.  The best comparison I found of services was from squidoo, entitled "Free Online Invitation Comparison and Evite Alternatives".  After looking at the sites listed, I choose Pingg - http://www.pingg.com/.

The reason for my choosing is the layout options, the ability to customize as well as the fact that it contained the key elements I needed.  These essential elements included (1) ability to e-mail invitations, (2) a web page for non-invited people to sign-up and register, (3) the ability to limit the number of registrations to the room size, and (4) the ability to communicate with the invited and registered attendees (to thank attendees, use surveymonkey for evaluation, or in case I have to change date or cancel.)

There are several which had these features and some that didn't.  A brief overview.

Evite didn't create a web page unless you were invited so it was out of the running... You could use it and say you weren't the person invited and then put in your name and e-mail but I couldn't figure out how to gather the e-mails and also explaining this seemed problematic...

PurpleTrail -- had to pay to limit the number of RSVPs -- so that's out

My Punch Bowl -- their e-mail went into my spam filter so this was a problem, plus it's name didn't seem professional.  Had all the other features -- probably my 3rd choice...

Man Vites -- not professional

Made It -- Doesn't work

Good Invitation -- Interesting might use sometime due to being able to used customized flash -- but no way to limit RSVP"s.

Events Listed -- Ticketing Service -- NA

Socializer -- My 2nd Choice -- probably better in functionality than Pinng but not as artsy or clean looking.  Had all the features and more and could be customized to make it look like I think I want it....

Invitastic - Not working on sending when I looked.... so I didn't look further.

Zoji -- Can't limit number of guests/RSVP's

Enclude -- Doesn't work

Shindigg - No limiting number of attendees and no website

Sendomatic -- Need to pay for more than 10 invites...

So Pingg (http://www.pingg.com/) is my choice --  I will let you know how it works out and if I switch to another system... If you know of any e-vite or ticketing systems that are free that have my criteria that I missed let me know.

Thanks -- Stephen

AllMovie

AMG started out in 1991 in Big Rapids, MI. Our original mission was to create books to help consumers find the "best" music. But, as our databases grew, we saw they could be powerful tools for online retailers and entertainment destinations. We started licensing the All Music Guide in 1993. In 1994, we added the All Movie Guide. Our award-winning websites started in 1995 and helped us find even more licensing customers. In 1998 we created the All Game Guide to address that growing market. In order to accommodate the growth of our business, we moved to Ann Arbor, MI in 1999. Since then, our staff has tripled in size.

What exactly does AMG do?

AMG licenses our entertainment content databases and technologies to a number of clients. We also maintain our websites, continue to produce new editions of our successful music guide series with Backbeat Books, and, in conjunction with Medalist Entertainment, we recently released the first group of CDs enhanced by our content.

The allmusic website was created in 1995 as a place for music fans to indulge their passion. Whether you’re visiting allmusic to look up an out-of-print recording, to get our take on a new release, or simply to explore the world of music and see where it may lead, you’ve come to the right spot.

The AMG editorial staff, along with hundreds of expert contributors (all music fanatics in their own right), has made allmusic the most comprehensive music reference source on the planet. We are all dedicated to creating and maintaining the knowledgeable, spirited content that music lovers and industry professionals have come to expect from AMG.

All genres and styles of music are covered here, ranging from the most commercially popular to the most obscure. We critique albums and artists within the context of their own genres - from opera to garage rock to traditional country. This ensures that fans of any style of music can depend on us to keep them up-to-date with their favorite artists as well as introduce them to new sounds.

For the vast range of artists, albums, and musical styles that we cover, we delve beneath the surface to present a level of detail unmatched anywhere else. Content on allmusic falls into the following four categories:

  • Meta Data: Facts about an album or artist, including title, tracks, genre, label, credits, release date, and cover and artist images.
  • Descriptive Content: Deeper details that really illuminate an artist or album including styles, moods, years active, instruments, birth/death date/place, and country of origin.
  • Relational Content: Information that helps you make meaningful connections between artists and the music – such as major influencers and followers, similar artists, top artists, and top albums.
  • Editorial Content: Original and insightful writing by AMG’s staff and network of professional freelance music contributors. This content includes biographies, album and song reviews, style descriptions, composition descriptions, and AMG ratings and picks.

By word-of-mouth alone, the allmusic website has gained phenomenal popularity, developing a large and loyal following among consumers and industry professionals alike. Editorial independence has always been an AMG hallmark, and the numerous awards allmusic has won are a testament to AMG’s status as a respected and trusted voice in music content and criticism.

About Our Roots

Originally known as All Music Guide, AMG was founded in 1991 to help consumers navigate the increasingly complex world of recorded music and discover the very best recordings. It was an ambitious, even overwhelming mission that would only be attempted by true music lovers like us. But we were determined, and the following year we published the first of our All Music Guide reference books.

By 1993, we’d expanded our content to include movies and video games, and we began licensing to retailers, online content sites and other companies in entertainment media. Licensing remains the core of our business today, and our licensees include some of the world’s most recognized brands, including Microsoft, AOL, Yahoo!, Amazon, Barnes & Noble, Best Buy, Ticketmaster, Musicmatch and Napster.

The Memento Project

The Memento Project

The Memento Project

About Guide Demos Tools

Have you ever felt frustrated by your inability to get to old versions of Web pages? Did you bookmark a page last year, and revisited it recently only to find that the current content isn't even remotely related to what caught your interest back then?

If so, the Memento project should be of interest to you because it advocates a rather straightforward approach to make navigating last year’s Web as easy as navigating today’s.

Remnants of the past Web are available, and there are many efforts ongoing to archive even more Web content. It’s just that the past Web is not as readily accessible as today’s. For example, if you want to see an archived version of http://cnn.com, you can go to the Internet Archive’s Wayback Machine and search for it there. Yes, you can find the CNN front page of 9/11 there. Or if you want to see an old version of the Wikipedia page about – say – Clocks, you can go to the current page and from there follow a link to one of the many prior versions. And, if you are interested in stories that featured on the BBC news site on your last year’s birthday, you can explore the archive that Matthew Somerville set up in his spare time.

But wouldn’t it be much easier if you could just connect to cnn.com, Wikipedia, or news.bbc.co.uk indicating that you are interested in the pages of March 20 2008, not the current ones? If you could activate a time machine in your browser or bot?

We definitely think it would be quite a feat, and we have some ideas on how to get there.

The Memento Project
