Balanced Views of Religion and Spirituality with Faith | Patheos

http://www.patheos.com/

Founded in 2008, Patheos.com is the premier online destination to engage in the global dialogue about religion and spirituality and to explore and experience the world's beliefs. Patheos is the website of choice for the millions of people looking for credible and balanced information or resources about religion. Patheos brings together the public, academia, and the faith leaders in a single environment, and is the place where people turn on a regular basis for insight into questions, issues, and discussions. Patheos is unlike any other online religious and spiritual site and is designed to serve as a resource for those looking to learn more about different belief systems, as well as participate in productive, moderated discussions on some of today's most talked about and debated topics.

As evidenced by the company founders' story, religion and spirituality continue to be an important part of American life, with more Americans today than ever before identifying themselves as spiritual. In fact, according to the Pew Internet Project, more than 82 million Americans and 64 percent of all Internet users utilize the Web for faith-related matters. The importance of religion and spirituality coupled with the growing use of the Internet for religious matters, point to the ongoing need for an online resource for religious and spiritual engagement and dialogue. Patheos fulfills this need.

Patheos connects seekers, students, and believers to faith communities, scholars, and resources for deeper exploration and greater understanding of faith practices, wisdom traditions, and spirituality.

Biblical Art on the WWW

Biblical Art on the WWW

The aim of this site is to provide a helpful assistant in the search for biblical art on the Internet. I hope that my contribution will prove helpful to people working with preaching, teaching etc.

History

It started as a Powerpoint presentation for personal use. I made a chronological division of the Bible into subjects, each subject being a scene or an episode from the biblical history. Then I downloaded relevant art from the Web, carefully connecting each artwork to the correct subject.

Two main problems halted this project: It was not useful to others than myself, and it grew very big very fast. To solve the first problem, I started to consider making an Internet site. As for the second problem, and also for the risk of copyright violations, I soon realized that hosting images was out of the question. Then came the idea of collecting and arranging links to images of biblical artwork hosted by other sites, using the chronological division already at hand.

I ended up with my site being about 1000 html-pages linked together, and a huge maintenance problem! So, I decided to ask my data-expert wife to make me a database.

Content

The main content of the present version of my site is a database accompanied by a collection of thumbnail pictures. I'm building the base scanning sites hosting images of biblical artwork, registering each work with title, artist(s), time of execution, technique/material, and location (the last three only if available; normally no location for prints, like etchings, woodcuts etc.).

When registering an artwork found on the Internet, I usually enter the information given by the host without further investigations. This means that my base may have errors not originating from me. So, I disclaim responsibility as to this kind of errors.

The core of the base is an updated edition of the chronological division mentioned above. All artworks are connected to one or several subjects, and to comprise all works in some way related to the Bible, the subject list includes portraits, and even non-biblical incidents and situations where biblical characters play a role.

Finally, the base normally contains links to the registered artworks.

Food Environment Atlas

Food Environment Atlas

Food environment factors—such as store/restaurant proximity, food prices, food and nutrition assistance programs, and community characteristics—interact to influence food choices and diet quality. Research is beginning to document the complexity of these interactions, but more is needed to identify causal relationships and effective policy interventions.

The objectives of the Atlas are:

  • To assemble statistics on food environment indicators to stimulate research on the determinants of food choices and diet quality

  • To provide a spatial overview of a community’s ability to access healthy food and its success in doing so

What information is included in the Atlas?

The Atlas assembles statistics on three broad categories of food environment factors:

  • Food Choices—Indicators of the community's access to and acquisition of healthy, affordable food, such as: access and proximity to a grocery store; number of foodstores and restaurants; expenditures on fast foods; food and nutrition assistance program participation; quantities of foods eaten; food prices; food taxes; and availability of local foods

  • Health and Well-Being—Indicators of the community’s success in maintaining healthy diets, such as: food insecurity; diabetes and obesity rates; and physical activity levels

  • Community Characteristics—Indicators of community characteristics that might influence the food environment, such as: demographic composition; income and poverty; population loss; metro-nonmetro status; natural amenities; and recreation and fitness centers

The Atlas currently includes 168 indicators of the food environment. The year and geographic level of the indicators vary to better accommodate data from a variety of sources. Some data are from the last Census of Population in 2000 while others are as recent as 2009. Some are at the county level while others are at the State or regional level. The most recent county-level data are used whenever possible.

Lincolniana at Brown

Lincolniana at Brown

The Lincoln Collection at Brown had its beginnings in September 1855, when a young Westerner arrived at Brown, after a three-day journey from Indiana, to pursue an East Coast education. He could hardly have known it then, but John Milton Hay was to bring a lot more than his wit to the university he grew to love in the generations that followed his 1858 graduation.

In the early part of the 20th century, when the University was planning to build a new library to replace its existing outmoded structure, Andrew Carnegie offered to pay half the cost of construction if the University would name it in honor of John Hay, its most distinguished alumnus, then recently deceased. To President Faunce, the answer was simple and obvious. Hay’s devoted service in the Lincoln White House as Assistant Private Secretary to the President (for more about this, see the online exhibit “John Hay’s Lincoln”) rendered the idea of a Lincoln collection another self-evident decision for the University, but finding a Lincoln collection of sufficient depth and importance proved to be something of a challenge. In 1920, President Faunce learned that Hugh McLellan was about to put his father’s sizeable Lincoln collection up for auction. The McLellan Collection was then one of the five most distinguished Lincoln collections in the world. Faunce prevailed upon John D. Rockefeller, Jr., Class of 1897, to purchase the collection as a donation to the University. Rockefeller then funded the outfitting of a special room in the Hay Library to house the McLellan Collection, with cases designed by Hugh McLellan and made from quartered oak. Within five years, the McLellan Collection had outgrown this small space, and an adjoining room was furnished to match the first, providing additional space.

The McLellan Collection has been supplemented over the years by some major gifts of Lincoln and related materials, increasing the collection to more than five times its original size. During his lifetime, John D. Rockefeller, Jr. remained the principle benefactor of the collection, collecting and donating additional manuscripts, books, portraits and prints. The papers of Rush Christopher Hawkins, which included a number of Lincoln manuscripts, came to the University in 1948 with the collections of the Annmary Brown Memorial. In 2006, a major bequest from Maury A. Bromsen, the late Boston book dealer, added hundreds of prints, books, pamphlets and museum objects to the collection, along with a portrait of Lincoln by one of his associates, the printing plates for an important series of Confederate etchings and manuscripts of Civil War generals George B. McClellan and P.T.G. Beauregard. More recently, the collection has been the beneficiary of the interest and attention of Douglas W. Squires, Class of 1973. In the interim, the Library has received numerous other small donations of material pertaining to Lincoln and the Civil War; we encourage interested patrons to consult the Library’s A to Z list of Special Collections for details on some of these.

The Hay Library’s Lincoln rooms remain today much as they were when first set up in the 1920s, although they are no longer actively used as research space. They house a permanent display of paintings, sculpture and objects from the Lincoln Collection, and may be viewed upon request. Materials from the Lincoln Collection are made available for research use in the Hay Library’s main reading room. For further information or to arrange for a tour of the Lincoln rooms, please contact: hay@brown.edu.

Foundation Center - Catalog of Nonprofit Literature

Foundation Center - Catalog of Nonprofit Literature

Catalog of Nonprofit Literature

Contents and Scope

The Catalog of Nonprofit Literature contains citations to materials collected by the Center's five libraries as well as selected literature from other sources. This authoritative bibliography of works in the field of philanthropy contains approximately 27,000 bibliographic entries, of which nearly 19,000 have abstracts. To view the latest additions to the database by subject category, see New Acquisitions in the Online Library.

Since 1988, when a retrospective conversion of all the Center's holdings was completed and a new bibliographic service unit was created, the Foundation Center has sought to increase public access to information on philanthropy and the nonprofit sector by identifying, indexing, and abstracting relevant books, articles, and non-print resources such as CD-ROM and audiovisual materials. To this end, the Center established a computerized database and began issuing annual printed volumes of The Literature of the Nonprofit Sector.

The first volume of The Literature of the Nonprofit Sector was published in 1989 and was the culmination of nearly a decade of planning. This first volume was welcomed by scholars at the time as the "single most indispensable research into the printed record of the nonprofit field." The annual supplements the Center continued to publish through 1996 were equally well received.

In 1997, in lieu of printing a ninth volume, the Center released the Catalog of Nonprofit Literature, a comprehensive searchable database that includes all the citations that would have appeared in print in the ninth volume and also cumulates the citations from the eight preceding volumes. This was the first database the Foundation Center put on the Internet, and the first time this valuable research tool was available in a searchable, user-friendly format to those seeking information on the literature of philanthropy.

In December 2000, the Catalog of Nonprofit Literature was further enhanced by the addition of three new search fields (publisher, library location, and record type) so that users can select among a total of nine search criteria. New software was acquired that enabled the database to be updated instantly, and two new report formats were added. More bibliographic data was added, such as the call number for the materials in the Center's libraries, and the Catalog of Nonprofit Literature became the libraries' in-house bibliographic catalog, as well as a unique database accessible universally on the Internet.

During 2001, in a collaboration with the Indiana University Center on Philanthropy, the Catalog of Nonprofit Literature has been further enhanced by an initiative to add links to the full-texts of selected journal articles. At this time, Grassroots Fundraising Journal, NonProfit Times, Nonprofit Quarterly, Contributions, and Stanford Social Innovation Review have pioneered in this major step forward. We will be adding new journals to the full-text project on a regular basis.

The C-SPAN Archives records, indexes, and archives all C-SPAN programming for historical, educational, research, and archival uses. Every C-SPAN program aired since 1987, now totaling over 170,000 hours, is contained in the C-SPAN Archives and immediately accessible through the database and electronic archival systems developed and maintained by the C-SPAN Archives.

The Archives records all three C-SPAN networks seven days a week, twenty-four hours a day. Programs are extensively indexed making the database of C-SPAN programming an unparalleled chronological resource. Programs are indexed by subject, speaker names, titles, affiliations, sponsors, committees, categories, formats, policy groups, keywords, and location. The congressional sessions and committee hearings are indexed by person with full-text. The video collection can be searched through the online Video Library.

All C-SPAN programs since 1987 are digital and can be viewed online for free. Duplicate copies of programs that have aired since 1987 can be obtained and used for education, research, review or home viewing purposes. Proceeds from the sale of these programs help support the operation of the Archives. Some programs are not copyright cleared for sale.

The Archives began within the Purdue University School of Liberal Arts in 1987. In July 1998, C-SPAN assumed responsibility for the archival operations and the facilities were moved from the Purdue University campus to the Purdue Research Park in West Lafayette, Indiana. The indexing, abstracting, and cataloging of C-SPAN programs is the responsibility of the C-SPAN Archives staff.

Sustainable Table

Sustainable Table

Sustainable Table celebrates local sustainable food, educates consumers on food-related issues and works to build community through food.

The program is home to the Eat Well Guide, an online directory of sustainable products in the U.S. and Canada, and the critically-acclaimed, award-winning Meatrix movies - The Meatrix, The Meatrix II: Revolting and The Meatrix II½.

Sustainable Table was created in 2003 by the nonprofit organization GRACE to help consumers understand the problems with our food supply and offer viable solutions and alternatives. Rather than be overwhelmed by the problems created by our industrial agricultural system, Sustainable Table celebrates the joy of food and eating.Sustainable Table

Today’s dominant form of agriculture relies on synthetic fertilizers and pesticides, large amounts of water, major transportation systems and factory-style practices for raising livestock. Industrial farming creates over-processed, over-traveled, and under-nourishing food that may contribute to health problems like obesity, diabetes and heart disease. This type of food production causes pollution and creates environmental and public health problems that cost taxpayers both money and quality of life. Sustainable Table was launched to offer consumers a choice and to show that fresh food from small, independent family farmers is still available.

Eat Well GuideEat Well Guide
The first project of Sustainable Table is the Eat Well Guide, a free, online directory of sustainably-raised meat, poultry, dairy and eggs from farms, stores, restaurants, bed & breakfasts and other outlets in the United States and Canada. Consumers enter their zip or postal code to find wholesome products available locally or when traveling.

The Eat Well Guide currently hosts nearly 9,000 entries, with new outlets added daily. Users can save their favorite listings and keep notes in the online Notebook feature. And in an effort to connect consumers locally, the Guide lists local and national organizations working on sustainable food issues.

The Eat Well Guide has received numerous endorsements from media outlets including the New York Times, Washington Post, Consumer Reports, Health Magazine, San Francisco Chronicle, and Sunset Magazine.

The Nutrition.gov site was launched in November, 2004 and a major renovation was completed in February 2008.

FNIC's staff of trained nutrition professionals, most of whom are Registered Dietitians (R.D.), provide information on food and human nutrition.

America the Bountiful

http://digital.lib.ucdavis.edu/projects/food/

Food is a major facet of civilization and food in America reflects the many cultures that have met and blended in the Great Melting Pot. Furthermore, food in America is a reflection of the great bounty that is seen as a byword for America. Under the direction of University of California, Davis, Nutrition Department Professor Louis Grivetti, a number of individuals and organizations researched and assembled an exhibit chronicling the use of 10 classic American food groups including: beef, chicken, turkey, pork, potatoes, corn, greens, wheat, beans, and apples. These foods continue to play a major role in American culture.
